RESPECT SERIES: I have RESPECT for myself which produces respect for others.
INTELLIGENCE SERIES: I am intelligent and I make decisions which lead to success.
DESIRABLE SERIES : I am desirable, beautiful and only I can determine my self-worth.
ENDURANCE SERIES: I have the endurance to overcome all obstacles and fulfill my hopes and dreams.
3-D is a holistic youth development curriculum designed for girls ages 13-19. Formerly known as “P.R.I.D.E.” the curriculum was developed in 1998 for use in the Demoiselle 2 Femme “Young Ladies to Women” signature program and has undergone several modifications since that time. 3-D is comprised of five (5) modules based on the principles of P.R.I.D.E. (Power. Respect. Intelligence. Desirable. Endurance). The curriculum provides (40) interactive workshop sessions which are implemented using a positive youth development model with urban undertones.
The holistic approach of the curriculum challenges students to avoid sexual risk taking while also addressing the at-risk behaviors of violence, alcohol, tobacco and drug usage. Through 3-D, girls confront the issues of sexual assault, dating violence, teen pregnancy, bullying and media influence. In addition to prevention messages, 3-D also promotes positive peer and parenting relationships, decision making, self-worth, the non-verbal messages of clothing, social etiquette, intimacy, marriage, and so much more. The curriculum includes an introduction which describes the “best practices learned from more than 15 years of program implementation, handouts for all sessions, more than 40 teaching activities, a Games and Resource section. The curriculum has been reviewed and approved as medically accurate by the Administration for Children and Families. Workshop sessions can also be modified for classroom-based education.
Evaluation: The 3-D is currently under national evaluation as an evidence based initiative to reduce teen pregnancy by Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago. The evaluation is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Administration for Children and Families (AFL). For an overview of the Chapin Hall research design and baseline data click here. (this is the link: http://d2fcatalyst.com/2013/09/11/d2f-pregnancy-prevention-program-evaluation-findings-from-u-of-c-chapin-hall-first-baseline-survey/ Prior to the evaluation study with Chapin Hall, the 3-D curriculum was evaluated under the Office of Population Affairs-Adolescent Family Life as an evidence-based risk prevention program. Due to federal appropriations, the study was halted after the third year (1- year planning, 2 years implementation) of a five year demonstration project. The quasi-experimental evaluation reported statistical significance in total abstinence mean scores among girls with previous sexually activity and no change among girls with no previous sexual activity. Data also reported statistical significance in behavioral intentions to delay sexual activity as well as significance in changed attitudes and awareness of the increased risks of alcohol, drugs, and violence. Cultural Competence: The 3-D Curriculum provides the unique opportunity for users to infuse their own cultural diversity within the workshop sessions. Users customize information within the curriculum to meet the cultural influence or experiences of their group. Cultural competency will be greatly influenced by the demographics of the target group, as well as the facilitator’s knowledge and ability to address cultural issues, norms and values within the target community.
Age-Appropriateness: The 3-D Curriculum is most appropriate for girls ages 13 and up. Due to the mature nature of the information, some workshop sessions may not be suitable for younger groups, depending on the community. Sessions however may be modified to meet the specific needs of younger girls.
Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework of the program intervention draws upon three theories: The Ecological Systems Theory, The Theory of Reasoned Action and the Empowerment Theory. The primary goal of the approach and its use of behavioral change theories is to shift from a problem-centered model aimed at attacking negative youth behaviors to strategies that emphasize the provision of family, school and community resources that support healthy decision making during adolescence.
